For more information see the Maps and Data section

The Compass Page
The Compass Page provides a graphic representation of a traditional floating needle compass. It displays differently depending on if you are navigating (following a route) or tracking. The compass rotates so that the heading is always up. If you are navigating, the compass displays a bearing arrow, which points in the direction of the next stop in the route.

The Trip Info Page
The Trip Info Page contains eight information fields that occupy the entire screen (three information fields display if the Earthmate is in large-text mode). Each field is customizable with one of the many available information field options.

The Find Page
You can use the Find button (the button that displays with a magnifying glass) to search for addresses, roads, cities, waypoints, coordinates, and more. There are two Find search options:
  • » Find Near Map Center
Use the Find Near Map Center search option to search for categories of information (such as geographic features, waypoints, points of interest, etc.) near your current map center. The number of search results returned is based on the amount of search results available (not on distance). Find Near Map Center searches stop after 200 search results are found.
  • » Find By Name
Use the Find By Name search option to search for a specific location, such as a specific address, point of interest, etc. To narrow your search results, you can choose either the Contains or Begins With option to search for results that contain or begin with certain character(s).

The Waypoints Page
You can use the Mark button (the button that displays as a push pin) on the Earthmate GPS PN-20 to mark a waypoint at your current GPS location (or at the current map center/cursor position if panning). Once a waypoint has been added, you can customize the waypoint name, coordinates, and comments. The device will store up to 1000 waypoints in internal memory.

The Routes Page
There are many ways to create routes on the Earthmate GPS PN-20. You can create a route:
  • » From your current GPS location to a waypoint
  • » From your current GPS location to a Find search result
  • » Between two waypoints
  • » Between two Find search results
  • » Between a waypoint and a Find search result
Once you have created a route, you can view its directions, edit the route, delete the route, and more. The device will store up to 50 routes in internal memory.
Routing is possible for both walking and in-vehicle situations, using either the direct or road routing settings. On-device routing for road routes should be used for fairly short routes, with longer routes best generated on the desktop in advance and transferred to the GPS. The on-device road routing is fine for cross-town and in-state routes and includes an audible beep warning before each turn, as well as the ability to recalculate routes when you stray off course.

The Tracks Page
Earthmate GPS PN-20 is set to record GPS tracks by default. That means that the device will create a track ("breadcrumb trail") of your travels until you turn recording off.
The Tracks Page lets you save, clear, or follow the current track, or view/follow an existing track. The device will store up to 10 track logs (with a 10,000 point limit each) in internal memory.

The Sun-Moon Page
Use the Sun/Moon Page to view the sunrise/sunset and moonrise/moonset information as well as the moon phase information for your current GPS location. The current date and time also display at the top of the screen.

The Tide Page

Maps and Data Transferable to the PN-20
XMap USA Topographic Data 2007
This map dataset includes DeLorme's vector-based topographic maps for the U.S. and is included with all PN-20 bundles. Use this option to display scaleable topographic maps that include roads and trials, rivers and other hydro features, contours, geographic features and landforms, parks and much more. Map Packages that include XMap USA Topographic Data 2007 will also include other visible vector data, such as Openspace GIS layers, draw objects or XData datasets, at a low resolution. For high-resolution vector data layers, choose XMap Vector Data Snapshot (see below).
Satellite Imagery
10-meter resolution color satellite imagery available by the state or region or as part of a custom Aerial Data Pack through XMap's Netlink tab. Select this dataset if a regional perspective is required.
USGS Quads (3DTQ)
Seamless USGS 7˝ minute quad maps originally drawn at a scale of 1:24,000 and used extensively on mapping projects for many decades. This dataset is available by the state or region or as part of a custom Aerial Data Pack through XMap's Netlink tab. Select this option if geographically registered USGS map is needed.
Aerial Imagery (DOQQ)
1-meter resolution black and white aerial imagery, derived from the USGS Digital Ortho Quarter Quad program. This data is part of custom Aerial Data Pack through XMap's Netlink tab. Choose this option for a to see black and white imagery at a reasonably high resolution.
Color Aerial Imagery
Recently added to the list of available datasets for XMap, this dataset is a download option from within the Netlink tab in XMap. Derived from the US Department of Agriculture's NAIP program this imagery is available in either 1- or 2-meter resolution, depending on the state. Select this option if you're interested in viewing high quality, recent color aerial imagery on the device.
Image Data Series
This option will only appear if an image file, registered using XMap's ImageReg function, is part of the current XMap Project. The ImageReg tool allows any image, regardless of its source, contents or format, to be registered or aligned with the underlying map, thus creating a map data layer. Choose this Map Package option to display a scanned paper map, a nautical chart, a pipeline diagram or any other imported image on the PN-20.
XMap Raster Snapshot
As its name implies, this option, if selected, will capture all of the currently visible raster data within the selected area. This might include any of the imagery options mentioned above as well as MrSID and GeoTIFF datasets that are part of the current XMap Project. This option is selected if variety of imagery is available for the area of interest.
XMap Vector Snapshot
This type of data will include all of the visible vector objects in the area chosen, including the USA Topographic map features, draw objects, XData points and Openspace GIS layers. The XMap Vector Snapshot produces a high-resolution map and, because of the resulting file size, should be chosen only if a relatively small geographic area is selected.
Regional Map Packages
XMap 5.2 includes 16 preformatted regional map packages that contain major roads and highways, each covering several U.S. states. As needed, these packages can be transferred or removed from the device. Note that the on-device routing function requires the appropriate region be available on the PN-20.
World Base Map
A low resolution base map of the world is preinstalled on the PN-20 showing major roads, cities, and geographic features.
Exchanging Maps and Data with the PN-20
Overview
XMap 5.2 has been designed to allow the transfer of virtually any map or data, regardless of its source, to the PN-20 and to efficiently integrate field-collected data into the desktop software.
Creating a Map Package
The Handheld Export tab in XMap 5.2 contains the functions necessary for the selection of geographic areas of map data to be transferred to the PN-20. Geographic areas are selected from an adjustable grid that appears on the map.
All of the selected tiles are combined to create a single Map Package. The actual map data that is contained in a Map Package is chosen by clicking the Options button. This displays a list of all of the map data types that are currently available, as well as a sliding scale that is used to select the zoom level range for each data type.
Handheld Export Options
See Maps and Data for more information on the type of data that can be used to create a Map Package.
Creating Waypoints in XMap for Transfer to the PN-20
XMap's Draw tab contains a tool for creating waypoints that can transferred to the device. Each waypoint can be assigned a symbol from the Earthmate PN-20 symbol set so it will appear the same in the desktop software and on the device. Creating waypoints in XMap and transferring them to the PN-20 is useful for identifying critical field assets and for enabling efficient navigation to targeted locations.
Waypoint Tool
Exchanging Maps, Waypoints, and Routes with the PN-20
After saving the necessary Map Packages and/or creating a Waypoint layer or route, the Exchange button in the Handheld Export tab is clicked to initiate the transfer process.
The Exchange dialog box displays the available Map Packages, waypoints, and routes on the left and the maps and data that have been installed on the PN-20 on the right. Transferring the files is as easy as clicking the Send button.
XMap — PN-20 Exchange Window
Depending on the size of the Map Package, it may be convenient to transfer the file directly to an optional SD card using a dedicated card reader. If a USB card reader has been connected, this option can be chosen from the drop-down list at the top of the Exchange dialog box. Once the Map Package is transferred, the SD card can be reinserted in its cradle in PN-20's battery compartment.
Downloading Field-Collected Data into XMap
The same Exchange dialog box that is used to transfer data to the PN-20 is used to download field-collected waypoints and tracks. Selecting the required waypoints and tracks in the right window and clicking Receive transfers the data to the Draw tab in XMap. Labels, comments, and symbols that were assigned in the field are retained when the objects are displayed in XMap.
Users of XMap 5.2 GIS Editor or Enterprise can easily transfer waypoints and tracks to OpenSpace GIS layers. After clicking the file button in the Draw tab, the Copy To button includes the option to copy the selected waypoint or track layer to a GIS layer.
Copying to a GIS Layer
In the GIS tab, collected data can be analyzed, queried, edited, symbolized, exported in shapefile format, and even published to the Web.
